So you’re thing about becoming a nurse? Nursing is a hot career right now; much of the economy is in flux, and nursing is one of the few profession’s that’s growing, not laying people off.

Here are 10 great things about nursing as a career:

1.) Tuition reimbursement. Many workplaces in the health field will repay some or all of your nursing student loans, AND to get them to pay for your continuing education.

2.) Sign-on bonuses. Many employers are so desperate for nurses that they are offering thousands of dollars in sign-on bonuses. You will likely have to sign an agreement to stay for a certain amount of time before you receive the bonus.

3.) Flexible schedules. You can work days, nights, weekends, part-time, full-time, overtime…whatever suits you.

4.) Speaking of overtime, it generally pays time and a half. You will also receive financial incentives if you work the night shift or the weekend shift.

5.) Travel nursing. Travel nursing agencies pay experienced nurses at a higher rate than staff positions, pay travel expenses, and usually pay for the cost of accommodations. Some travel nursing agencies offer vacation pay and benefits.

6.) Job satisfaction. You know that you are helping people who are sick and vulnerable, and you can make a positive difference in their lives.

7.) Great benefits if you’re working a staff job. Health benefits, 401K plans, vacation pay, and pensions are offered by many employers.

8.) High demand. You won’t have to worry about being unemployed any time in the next few decades.

9.) The ability to select from a variety of settings. Prisons, schools, hospitals, clinics, resorts, cruise ships…they all need nurses.

10.) Opportunity for advancement. Registered nurses can become managers, they can get advanced degrees and earn more money, they can specialize in different areas of medicine…and their employers will likely pay for their continuing education.
